Avoiding Junk: Calories, Content, and Conversations

A simple truth: a great life begins by avoiding three kinds of junk—calories, content, and conversations.

When life feels on track, I’m mindful about what I consume—food, media, and conversations that nourish me and move me forward. But life has a way of knocking me off track.

It took me a long time to see the pattern: when I feel low, I reach for food, media, or conversations that soothe me in the moment but leave me drained later. It starts small. Then I spiral—stuffing myself with junk to escape reality.

Over time, I’ve worked hard to break these spirals. When I do slip, I try to course-correct quickly. But more importantly, I’ve begun asking: why do I feel the urge to escape my disciplined life in the first place?

Strangely, exploring that question feels like the real beginning of the inner work: understanding myself.
