Listening Is a Muscle Too

I’ve been working out on and off for just over two decades. I’ve never been totally out of shape, but I’ve also never seen the kind of gains that would justify so many years of effort. I realized that the times I was off my fitness journey had a bigger impact than the times I was on it.

At first, I thought the problem was a lack of motivation. Then I realized what I really lacked was discipline.

So I worked hard to become more disciplined — so disciplined that even when my body was clearly asking for rest, I would push through. I told myself: a disciplined person never skips a workout.

But soon, sickness, sprains, and injuries started interrupting my workouts. Despite all my discipline, I was still being inconsistent.

Eventually, I learned some hard lessons. I had overestimated my base level of fitness, underestimated the importance of rest and recovery, and pushed too hard in the name of discipline.

Now, I continue my fitness journey with those lessons in mind.

I started over — like a beginner. I began listening to my body each day, resting when needed. I made sure my body never had to shout by falling sick.

These days, I consistently hit the gym five days a week for a workout or a run — sometimes six. The seventh day is always rest.

It’s not a foolproof formula. Progressive overloadis still the name of the game. But any kind of overload carries the risk of injury or illness. I try my best and do what I can to minimize the risks.
